EMDR Therapy Protocols for Early Intervention and Ongoing Traumatic Stress
Dr. Ignacio "Nacho" Jarero & Team

Learn our cutting-edge, symptom-trajectory-based stepped-care approach to treat recent, present, or past adverse experiences with our suite of safe and evidence-based protocols and treatment intervention procedures.

With this transformative, symptom-trajectory-based stepped-care approach to treatment, you will be able to provide in-person interventions for: early treatment (critical care & rapid response), complex clinical presentations (e.g., prolonged adverse experiences and ongoing traumatic stress), and group intervention (for both small 2 people and large 100+ groups).

EMDR-IGTP

This group protocol has the most research conducted in the EMDR field aside from the EMDR Standard Protocol. The EMDR Integrative Group Treatment Protocol for Ongoing Traumatic Stress was the first group EMDR intervention developed in the world and utilizes the Butterfly Hug and art therapy to facilitate the AIP system. This protocol allows for a group administration of individual EMDR treatment, ensuring that many individuals can be treated simultaneously. This is highly valuable in settings where resources are limited.

EMDR-PRECI

The EMDR Protocol for Recent Critical Incidents and Ongoing Traumatic Stress (EMDR-PRECI) is an evidence-based, individual protocol that treats acute trauma, ongoing traumatic stress and prolonged adverse experiences to reduce or eradicate the potential for traumatic memory consolidation and resulting symptoms of PTSD. For example, this could include a recent traumatic event that just happened 3 days or 3 months ago. It also includes trauma that clients are still experiencing, such as vicarious trauma, abusive relationships, interpersonal violence, etc that are ongoing. Lastly, prolonged experiences are events that happened over a period of time but are not currently ongoing, such as a client that experienced sexual assualt for five years as a teenager, but is not currently experiencing it.

ASSYST-I

The Acute Stress Syndrome Stabilization (ASSYST) individual procedure is designed to focus on the client’s nervous system regulation. It is utilized in rapid response settings and offered to client’s immediately after a traumatic experience (within hours, days or weeks). Additionally, it is used in Phase 2 of EMDR therapy to help the client prepare for reprocessing by regulating their nervous system and expanding their window of tolerance before starting the reprocessing phases of EMDR.

ASSYST-G

The Acute Stress Syndrome Stabilization (ASSYST) group procedure is designed to fill the gap between Psychological First Aid (PFA) and High-Intensity Intervention psychotherapy (e.g., EMDR, TF-CBT) after a critical incident or adverse experience when the person shows severe symptoms of psychological distress, physiological reactivity, and/or deterioration in current functioning. The group nature of this procedure allows for therapists to serve a large number of people in a short period of time.

Training Overview: Expand your clinical and research horizons

A substantial portion of individuals experiencing recent traumatic events suffer from acute traumatic distress, with symptoms of intrusion, avoidance and hyper-arousal, associated with significant impairment in daily functioning. Many will recover spontaneously, but some will go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mood disorder, or other psychological and physical disorders, with associated functional impairments.

Research suggests the possibility that early intervention, which reduces or eliminates acute distress, may prevent the development of subsequent disorders. As we know, a successful trauma treatment produces significant economic, social and cultural benefits for individuals, families and communities (White Paper, EMDR Early Intervention and Crisis Response Summit Conference, Boston, MA, April 20-22, 2018).

This training, designed for EMDR-trained therapists, will expand your clinical and research horizons as you learn our highly effective and safe suite of treatment interventions. Clinicians will learn four transformative protocols and procedures:

  • EMDR Integrative Group Treatment Protocol for Ongoing Traumatic Stress (EMDR-IGTP-OTS)
  • EMDR Protocol for Recent Critical Incidents and Ongoing Trauma Stress (EMDR-PRECI)
  • Acute Stress Syndrome Stabilization (ASSYST) Procedure for Individuals
  • Acute Stress Syndrome Stabilization (ASSYST) Procedure in a Group Setting

Our protocols and procedures can be provided in-person or online remotely. They also have the most research in the EMDR Early Intervention and Ongoing Traumatic Stress field with nearly 80 highly quality, peer-reviewed published papers. No Poster, Conference Presentations, in-press, or Newsletter publications are included on this list.

Follow the link to our protocols and procedures bibliography.

For clinicians that work with clients experiencing prolonged adverse experiences and/or ongoing traumatic stress, they will walk away from this training with the confidence and theoretical knowledge to know exactly how to conceptualize these cases, develop an appropriate treatment plan and target sequencing for clients. They will have the competency to provide these adapted protocols in sessions with clients.

For clients showing hyperarousal and tendency to dissociative reactions, therapists will have the ability to provide the ASSYST Individual to regulate client´s Autonomic Nervous System sympathetic branch, keep them inside their window of tolerance during the reprocessing phases, and prevent dissociative reactions.

Lastly, for clinicians that want to provide EMDR in a group setting, this training will teach and empower those clinicians to provide EMDR to between 2 – 100+ people AT THE SAME TIME! This option allows for more clinicians to provide EMDR therapy to more people, and especially in low resource settings, this option is essential.

*The training portions that include the ASSYST protocols are not available for CE’s for psychologists.

Testimonials from Attendees

If you have not been to see Nacho before, do find the time! Nacho and Kelly have accomplished amazing things in the world of trauma and can support your development in an easy, fun and professional manner.

Reg Morrow Robbinson

Yes, it is worth it. I took the training a few months ago and have used it with several cases. Very effective and clear training. Got for it!

Ximena Rivera Rosingana

I just wanted to write and let you know how much I am enjoying the advanced EMDR training. Thank you for encouraging me to do it! Your explanations of the AIP model have been the clearest and best I have ever heard, the training is really very good!

Laura Beech

It is the only training I have taken twice – in my entire career. Definitely worth it. I use the PRECI all the time!

Maggie Herbruck Robbins

Look into Dr. Nacho Jarero’s training on the ASSYST and PRECI protocols. I attended his training and it was immensely helpful for ongoing traumatic stress, group EMDR and rapid response.

Sarah Voigt-Campbell

I’ve been to this training and I don’t want to oversell it but in my opinion the training was absolutely amazing. Dr. Jarero is a great presenter, extremely knowledgeable and really funny (which I really like in trainings). I would wholeheartedly recommend going!!!!!!

Jeremy Hogg

Dr. Jarero’s training really helped me with my work at our emergency shelter. The ASSYST procedure has helped me to stabilize some of the teens I see right after they enter the shelter. The ASSYST allows for stabilization before they begin their trauma work and it helps build rapport with the clients in a way where they know that you as a clinician can assist them through this difficult time. I really enjoyed Dr. Jarero’s training not just because of the protocols but also his delivery. He was so engaging that it did not even feel like a training.

Lizet Lizardo

I recently completed Dr. Jarero’s 4-module [on-demand] training on the ASSYST and PRECI-OTS. Let me just say that the PRECI-OTS protocol has changed my practice dramatically in just 3 weeks. My clients are shifting like never before. I can’t tell you how valuable this resource has quickly become to me.

Melissa Spaulding

I love Nacho’s teaching style, warmth, and humor. The protocols are very practical and can be used immediately after the training. We experienced it firsthand before he explained how it worked. Then, he was able to back it up with his amazing research. I’ve used it in my private practice and in the field in Ethiopia and have had incredible results. I highly recommend this training!

Participation Requirements

Skill Level: Advanced

Our intended audience are therapists who have completed an EMDRIA or EMDR Iberoamerica-Approved Basic Training. People only trained in EMDR by PESI are not eligible for the training.

Course Completion Requirements

If they are not able to attend the entire event live, then they have the option of completing the course by viewing the recorded version. Course completion requirements for this option include viewing the entire recorded version and passing a posttest with an 80% score. Participants can take the quiz as many times as needed to receive an 80% passing score. The requirements for successful completion for this option also include completing the course evaluation.

Online, On-Demand Course Access

You will receive a login and password (by email) for our online training portal (Scaling Up Hub) on the day your course starts (or on the day you purchase the course, if on-demand or if the course has already began).

You will have access to all course materials 90 days after the last Q&A session is scheduled (or 90 days after purchase for the on-demand only training). After 90 days, you will be given the option to continue to receive access to the course materials for $40 per month.
